Which Candles Emit Carcinogens?

As the days start their slow climb toward the winter solstice I always find myself lighting more and more candles to compensate for the diminishing sunlight. I love the warmth and flicker of light they can infuse a room with, rooms otherwise flat by the increasingly muted autumn and winter skies. Yet while candles can create a lovely mood, some types also create toxic emissions that are hardly worth the ambiance.

The candle culprits? Paraffin wax candles. These candles, which are made from petroleum, are a source of known human carcinogens and indoor pollution, researchers said in a study presented last month at the American Chemical Society’s national meeting in Washington, D.C. In the study, R. Massoudi and Amid Hamidi found that candles made from beeswax or soy, although more expensive, are safer because they do not release potentially harmful pollutants.

“An occasional paraffin candle and its emissions will not likely affect you,” Hamidi said in a news release from the American Chemical Society. “But lighting many paraffin candles every day for years or lighting them frequently in an unventilated bathroom around a tub, for example, may cause problems.” Hamidi also said that some people who believe they have an indoor allergy or respiratory irritation may actually be reacting to pollutants from burning candles. They noted that ventilation can help reduce the level of pollutants in closed rooms–but I say, better yet: switch to a healthier alternative!

Another part of the healthy candle discussion is centered around fragrance–synthetic fragrance, by which the majority of candles are made fragrant by. A study performed by the EPA found that numerous potentially hazardous chemicals are commonly used in synthetic fragrance, including acetone, benzaldehyde, benzyl acetate, benzyl alcohol, camphor, ethanol, ethyl acetate, limonene, linalool, and methylene chloride.

So, your best bet? Unscented, 100 percent beeswax candles with a cotton wick are the safest option–but aren’t suitable for vegan candle-lovers who should opt for unscented soy-based candles. There are also a number of other vegetable wax based candles on the market; just make sure you are avoiding paraffin and synthetic fragrance.

Tower Grove Farmers' Market Kickoff Scheduled for May 9th

Even though the groundhog saw his shadow and there are supposed to be six more weeks of winter, I believe spring is just around the corner. And, so is the Tower Grove Farmer's Market & Bazaar Kick-off. So, look for me there. I'll have my usual variety of handmade, all natural and organic soaps, and all natural pure soy candles, as well as the wonder goat milk body cream I developed last year.

Christmas Bazaar, December 7th

The Gruenberg Society Kicks off the Holiday Shopping Season

It seems that I have been absent from my blog for a month. So much is going on this summer: Nice weather has permitted more outside activities; a bit of travel has come into play; my volunteer activities have kicked up a couple of notches. None-the-less, I have made a few more batches of soap. But there hasn't been time to plan the open house as hoped. Sorry to disappoint. But don't forget, you can e-mail me or call to order your soaps, body creams and soy candles.

On The Curing Rack

Since returning from a short vacation in the Natural State of Arkansas, I've made several batches of your favorite soaps that are now on the curing rack:

Lavender, Patchouli, & Cedarwood, AKA Romance in the Woods. This blend of essential oils combines the a fresh, sweet, floral, herbaceous aroma of lavender that is soothing and refreshing, Cedarwood essential oil known for its tranquilizing and soothing effects, and Patchouli, a distinct heavy, earthy, musty, sensuous scent—all this in a rich Olive Oil soap. Ingredients: saponified olive, coconut and palm oils, with added aloe vera and vitamin E, and grapefruit seed extract, plus lavender and patchouli herbals for texture.
Sweet Orange & Ginger. This Olive Oil soap is made to go with my new Goat's Milk Body Cream. I've added essential oils of Sweet Orange and Ginger and a sprinkling of orange peel to decorate the top. Sweet Orange has an uplifting aroma that helps to relax and balance the spirit. Ginger is sought after due to its aphrodisiac and stimulant properties. Made with my favorite Olive oil recipe which includes coconut, and palm kernel oils, vitamin E , castor and grape seed oils--and the essential oils, of course.
Avocado Soap. This is one of my most gentle soaps yet is often overlooked. Avocado oil penetrates the skin more deeply than other oils allowing it to transport nutrients through the outer epidermis of the skin and into the dermis for increased effectiveness. Avocado oil is great for all skin types, and is especially kind to mature, sensitive or troubled skin. Full of vitamins A, B, D, E, protein, and lecithin. Highly emollient with anti-wrinkle, anti-bacterial, and anti-oxidant properties. Anti-oxidants have been shown to slow the aging process. Ingredients include saponified Avocado Oil, Olive, Jojoba, Coconut, Palm, Caster Oils and vitamin E.
Peppermint & Rosemary. Scientific evidence shows that the aromatic Peppermint herb helps stimulate the body and mind. Rosemary essential oil has an overall stimulating and invigorating effect that works on both mental and physical levels as well; it is also a great antidepressant, antiseptic, and stimulant. Ingredients: saponified olive, coconut and palm oils, with added vitamin E, and grapefruit seed extract, crushed organic rosemary herbs.
Lavender & Rosemary Beneficial for treating blemishes, both lavender and rosemary herbs have a mild but stimulating effect on the skin. Lavender has a light sweet, captivating woodsy scent and Rosemary has a crisp, fresh aroma with a hint of a woodsy fragrance. Mix them together and you get an enchanting aura. Ingredients: Saponified oils of olive, coconut, palm, castor with essential oils of lavender and rosemary, lavender and rosemary leaves.

I've run into a lot of you while I'm shopping at the TGFM. "I need some soap," you say. I had the good fortune of nearly selling out during the spring but do have some left. That's part of the reason I am not at the market during summer--that, and it is too hot and humid for me. Yes, I'm a wimp.

As it stands, an Open House will probably be held in September now. However, you may call and drop by whenever you need something, as Allyce B. did when she needed a case of soy candles made to order.

Dreaded Mosquito Season Eased With Morgan's Insect Repellent Products

Your response to my Insect Repellent products has been amazing. Once again, I'm sold out. But I will be making more--today, actually. But because the cold process soap takes 4 to 6 weeks to cure, and the mosquito season is here now, I will be making hand-milled soap and goat's milk and glycerine with the same insect-repelling essential oils I put in the cold process soap. This soap cures faster and has the same benefits when adding my special formula I-R* blend of essential oils. This will be available from me or from the Local Harvest Grocery on Morganford, Tower Grove South.

Don't forget my soy lotion bar with insect repellent essential oils--all natural and organic: contains soy wax, apricot kernel oil, shea butter and a carefully formulated blend of essential oils of geranium, lavender, patchouli, cedar wood, a dash of peppermint and ground cloves. Just rub it on your exposed skin, et voila!

Vegetable Shampoo Bar, Unscented and Scented, with essential oils of course. This shampoo bar is solid and can replace liquid shampoo and conditioners. It makes a rich, thick lather. The oils and nutrients clean and condition the hair and scalp. Contains olive, castor, jojoba, coconut, shea butter, sweet almond, apricot kernel and avocado oils. All vegetable.

I spent the day making something new--a shampoo bar. I have been putting this one off because it ain't that easy--eight different oils plus two optional and an essential oil (of course I have to use those too). But the tough part was stirring it all to trace. (You soapers' out there understand trace.) The recipe said not to beat or use a blending stick. It instructed to stir by hand until reaching trace. So I followed instructions. It took a long time. I had to call my husband in twice to take over stirring for me while I stretched and rested my arms and back for a couple of minutes. After an hour and just when I thought the batch was failing, the mixture started to thicken. I was nearly in tears with joy. I'll let you know just how beautiful it is in 4 to 6 weeks--after it is cured.

Tin Can Blues...

So, last week I'm eagerly awaiting a package via UPS. It finally comes and I tear into the box to find the metal tins I ordered. Nice tins, but turns out they are too small for the soy lotion bars I made to go inside them. Drat! That means I went to the market without the insect repellant soy lotion bars I had promised. Sorry folks. I'll have the situation remedied in the coming week.

Sustainable and Organic--Sensible and Healthy

We had another great day at the Market last Saturday and I sold out of my insect repellent soaps already! But, this week I am making a wonderful soy lotion bar with insect repellent essential oils that I know you'll love. It is a lotion bar in a tin that you simply rub on your skin (as you would a lotion--thus lotion bar). I've added essential oils that are pleasing to the senses but keeps those buggy varmints away. In the meantime, I'll be making more of this soap.

I've also decided to go ahead with the naked lotion as well--since so many of you have asked for it. It is goats milk and honey lotion. What essential oil shall I use?

Tower Grove Farmers' Market & Bazaar

After a few stormy days, Market day turned out to be a beautiful 70 degrees, the rain holding off until after market ended.

It was great to see everyone again--my regular customers and lots of new faces, old neighbors and new ones. It was like a big party with delicious food, great music and entertainment, and all the organic produce, and home made products and artistry.

I'm going to be very busy this week making more soaps and candles and getting ready for next Saturday. Look for a new product--a soy lotion bar. I'll be making a lotion bar that has bug repellent essential oils too. So don't miss the Market, there will be an equally good time this coming weekend, Saturday, May 17th. See you there!

...and wonder what all the fuss is about, read on! Long ago, soap companies began removing glycerin and other great natural soap ingredients to increase profits. This required the need to add other less "skin-friendly" chemicals. (Just read the ingredients label on your store purchased bar of soap.) This process made "soap" more detergent than true soap. Soap cannot be made without using lye (Sodium Hydroxide). Before you panic, let me explain. Lye is used in the soap-making process but the finished product contains NO LYE. When mixed with the skin-loving oils used in my soap, lye goes through a chemical change called saponification. The lye is gone and all you have left is a truly wonderful product that will clean your skin without drying it out! You will love the feel and you will find that handmade soaps lasts longer than commercially made "soap."

Buzz Off Soap #1

Today was my first time back as a vendor of my Naked Soaps & Soy Candles at the Tower Grove Farmer's Market & Bazaar since late Spring. I opted out of the summer venue due to the heat and humidity (it's an outside bazaar) of the summers in St Louis. I can't take it. Although the humidity was in the 90s today, it was tolerable because the temp was in the 70s and it was overcast and threatening rain, which didn't come until we were packing up. Good timing, weather gods--thank you.

I've gotta say, I love my soaps, and during mosquito season, I especially love my "Buzz Off" soap formulas. The mosquitoes were biting when I got there--at least they were biting me. I just picked out a bar of Buzz Off #1 formula soap and rubbed it onto my bare skin and lightly over my clothing. Voila! No more mosquitoes on me today.

Well there may be bugs on some of you mugs, but there ain't no bugs on me!

My Buzz Off #1 formula is in a rich olive oil soap enhanced with Palm and Coconut oils and Shea Butter. Scents of pulverized whole cloves, pure, natural essential oils of peppermint and geranium which repel the insects while you enjoy your time outside. It has been one of my best sellers, mostly in the summertime.

My Buzz-Off Insect Repellent Soap #2 is loaded with five 100% Natural Essential Oils known to repel winged creatures--Citronella, Tea Tree, Eucalyptus, Cedarwood and Lavender. Useful against no-see-ums and especially effective repelling Mosquitoes.

Do they it really work? Well, that's always a loaded question, because every one's skin chemistry is so different. We all probably have someone in our family to whom bugs flock while leaving others alone. This soap is also one of my best sellers from May through September.

So both soaps work very well for a lot of people, and it will probably work well for you too. I've never had a customer tell me it didn't--they just come back for more. You can use them as usual in the shower, or travel with the dry bar, and moisten the bar slightly to rub it on as a repellent. This is soap, though; so don't use it above or around your eyes.

Soap bars come in 4.5 to 5 oz hand cut bars and sell for $6.00 each or two for $11.00.

California Eucalyptus Soap

When I was in California last month, I stopped to enjoy some eucalyptus trees. I had forgotten that they are everywhere in California. Lofty and captivating, its smell is clean and antiseptic like the scent from a medicine cabinet. Medicine is found in its oils which has been used to cure everything from an upset stomach to a nasty laceration. Doctors and primitive cultures have both used it as a healer.

I picked some of the leaves and brought them home with me. I dried them then crushed them, and made some wonderful eucalyptus soap with them. It is of great use in skin care, as it protects the skin from the clutches of inflammation, wounds and eruptions
It soothes aches, pains, sprains, wounds, sores. Helps eases headaches, and acts as a natural insect repellant. Eucalyptus helps with poor circulation, and the upper respiratory tract. It is a powerful antibacterial, and can aid in killing airborne bacteria.

Cautions: Avoid if pregnant, if have high blood pressure, or if a history of epilepsy. If you have sensitive skin, use with caution. Do not take internally. Keep out of reach of children.

Chamomile-Lavender Herbal Dream Soap

I made a new soap today.

Oooo Baby. This soap has a very nice combination of organically grown chamomile and Lavender essential oil, with a generous dose of Jasmine, Rose and Sandalwood essential oils. And you can’t have chamomile without a bit of honey.

All of this is blended into my favorite Olive Oil soap recipe (with coconut and palm oils). Grapefruit seed extract and honey act as natural preservatives. Chamomile is perhaps the world's most soothing herb; it can be used to treat skin inflammation and sunburns .

Chamomile is relaxing as a wash or compress for skin inflammations, sunburn, burns, and added to bath for relaxing tired, achy muscles and feet, and softening the skin.

So use it to bathe or shower, then sit and relax with a cup of tea and ponder your accomplishments of the day.

Pine Needle Scrub Soap

180 Days Until Christmas

Good Grief! It's July 1st and I haven't even begun my Christmas shopping.

Christmas aside and first things first. I don't like shopping, but I like giving. I'm going today to get some necessary things for my trip to California this week.

I like going to California. Each trip is a trip back home where friends and family reside. I was born there, lived there most of my life, went to schools, worked, played, married, divorced, raised children, and matured to some degree. I have formed memories from one end of the state to the other. Blah, blah, blah...

Anyway, my cousin's (Carolyn) son (J.J.) is getting married (to Jennifer) at Dana Point, CA, next Saturday. I need an outfit to wear to such a wedding since my normal attire consists of shorts and a tank top, or jeans and a tee-shirt, with flip-flops or tennis shoes on the feet--depending upon the midwestern weather. I've already sent a wedding gift and I'm taking an additional gift of soaps that I've made.

That's It!!! Is my Christmas Shopping finished?! Everybody gets SOAP.

But, I still need something to wear. Sigh.

I make Handcrafted Soaps--handmade in small batches using only vegetable oils, essentials oils, and organically grown herbs. Due to this handmade nature, design, texture and color variations may occur, but that is part of the soap's character and charm; it's NOT perfect or popped-out of a machine! Each bar weighs 4.5 to 5 ounces--larger than the average bar. Twenty-plus varieties available.

I also make Soy candles using Natural Soy Wax from soybeans, a renewable resource, grown here in the United States. They are clean burning (unlike paraffin or petroleum candles), soot-free, candles that will not damage your walls, ceilings, curtains, or carpets. They will not pollute your home (or lungs) with smoke or soot, making the air you breath safer. Slower burning than paraffin candles and therefore last approximately 40% longer, saving you money!
